Teacher in Art & Design, Art & Design
Doctor John O'Rourke is Course Leader of the Foundation Degree in Contemporary Fine Art, as well as the HND in Art and Design (Fine Art).
He is a sculptor and painter with an international profile. John is currently working on a two year project – a large sculpture of the famous musician Robert Wyatt. The sculpture is accompanied by 18 paintings and mixed media works – all focusing on Wyatt and his 1997 album Shleep
John was asked by the local Council to represent North Tyneside as an artist, in Oer-Erkenschwick, Germany. He created a 7 feet high steel sculpture of a miner, entitled 'Indweller', which will be unveiled as an exterior gateway feature for a developing area in that town in 2014.
He made another of his oak sculptures in 2010 for a priory in Maseru, capital of Lesotho, a kingdom landlocked within South Africa.
Similarly, John created portraiture in Missouri, USA, in 2011. Back in 2006 he won first prize in an exhibition organised by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
John has created many works for churches and other public spaces, including a piece which is in Pfizer's National Headquarters Building in Surrey.
He has exhibited his work consistently in galleries throughout the country since the early eighties, in both solo and group shows, and is a Life Member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors.
Since the mid-nineties his work has been regularly covered in art magazines. Also, many of his illustrated features have been published in ecclesiastic art and architecture periodicals, including an academic paper on abstract painting for an esoteric journal, published in India.
