Course content

The A Level in Photography is intended to introduce students to a range of approaches to the subject, both contemporary and traditional.

Students gain experience of the darkroom and black and white film based photography as well as exploring digital technology and digital imaging.

The aim is also to give students experience of the breadth of the subject as it is today so they will look at portraiture, documentary, narrative imagery, found photography, fashion photography, surrealism, experimental and abstract photography and much more.

You will use DSLRs, compact cameras, manual 'film' SLR cameras, studio flash and darkrooms to investigate digital and chemical photography. You will also be introduced to Photoshop and digital imaging.

Progression & careers

HND in Graphic Design, Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, Foundation Degree in Fine Art or Degree in Photography.

Careers in Professional Photography such as portrait, fashion, wedding and commercial.

Study units

Themed project and an externally set assignment.

Independently selected practical work and written study and an externally set assignment and 12 hour practical.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs Grade A* to C and a portfolio of work.


Component 1: Coursework. Component 2: Externally set examination ending with a 10 hour exam split over two weeks to complete a final piece.

Component 3: Coursework, practical work and a written study of 1500 - 3000 words. Component 4: Externally set examination, ending with a 15 hour exam split over two weeks to complete a final piece.
