Course content

If you fancy yourself as a film buff and are interested in the cinema industry then you'll love this course.

You will develop your own thoughts and critical views, as well as working on a creative project with a digital storyboard or an extended step outline as part of your practical assessment.

The course is designed to deepen your understanding and enjoyment of British and American cinema. You'll explore a wide range of films, develop skills of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection.

The British cinema part of the course focuses on how British film represents asylum seekers and immigrants in contemporary society. The key texts are Dirty Pretty Things and Yasmin.

The American Cinema module focuses on genre studies and considers the role of melodrama in American society. The key texts are American Beauty and The Virgin Suicides.

You'll visit a number of university events as well as regular cinema trips.

Progression & careers

FE/HE options include Film and Media-related degrees or HNC/HND qualification Art-related Degree.

Careers include: film production, TV editing, special effects technician, Journalism, PR and Marketing.

Exploring film form, British and American film, Film research and creative projects and a variety of film experiences, issues and debates.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade A* to C and a portfolio of creative work.


Combination of exams and two pieces of coursework (academic essay and one practical production).
